The Greenwood Bursary Fund

Grants are available to promising young musicians (aged 11-19) from The Greenwood Bursary Fund.

The Greenwood Bursary Fund was created by Merton Music Foundation from funds transferred to it from the Ronald Greenwood Musical Trust by the London Borough of Merton who had previously operated the trust.

Established in memory of Ronald Greenwood, a former Director of Education for Merton, the Trust's principal charitable aim was to "afford material assistance to young people who show a talent in music, such young people having need of assistance by reason of their financial circumstances".

The Fund is now operated in accordance with the Ronald Greenwood Musical Trust deed and an annual award is made to a young musician who shows great promise. (Subject to availability of funds)

Awards are currently limited to approximately £350 a year. Grants previously have been given towards the cost of tuition, workshops, purchase of musical instruments, etc.

Criteria for application to the fund:

Applications are considered from students resident in the London Borough of Merton. (External applications will not be considered)

Students will only be supported if they receive lessons through Merton Music Foundation and must continue for the length of the award made.

To be eligible to be considered for an award, you must:

1. Be receiving instrumental tuition and/or attending Music Centre activities provided by Merton Music Foundation, and

2. Have made significant progress and demonstrated a commitment to practice and participating in school or MMF events

To apply for an award, you should:

1. Complete the application form in full

2. Attach a copy of your most recent grade examination certificate and, if possible, your mark form if appropriate

3. Attach a supporting letter from your instrumental tutor at MMF

Awards from The Greenwood Bursary Fund are only for students of Merton Music Foundation and if you decide to study elsewhere, the award will be withdrawn. Grants are made in the form of a payment for instrument purchases (proof of receipts are required and must be dated after the award date) or as a subsidy towards the costs of instrumental tuition with MMF. In exceptional cases we will also support the cost of attending workshops and courses. Please note that payment is made direct to the provider of the training and not to parents. Payments to help with instrument purchases are usually made in instalments over a period of two years. Further awards for tuition are not available through this fund.
