MYCB & MYJO performing at the Championships!


MYCB performing at the Championships!

Two of our flagship groups, the Merton Youth Concert Band and Merton Youth Jazz Orchestra will be performing at this year's Wimbledon Tennis Championships during the Wimbledon Semi Finals Days.

On Thursday 2nd July, you can see the 80 strong Merton Youth Concert Band performing a variety of music from marches and films scores to light classical and jazz. MYCB is the Foundation's senior wind band, one of three concert bands at the MMF. MYCB gives frequent concerts throughout the year and participates in regular tours abroad, the most recent of which was to Lake Garda in Italy in 2008. Major concerts have included appearances at the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall, Fairfield Halls and Wimbledon Theatre. This year’s performance by MYCB’s marks the band’s 18th appearance at the Championships, where it has a long history of entertaining the crowds on Ladies’ Semi Finals Day.

On Friday 3rd July, it will be the turn of the Merton Youth Jazz Orchestra . MYJO has a strong reputation for its exciting big band concerts. The orchestra comprises of 28 musicians, including two singers, whose ages range from 13 to 21. The orchestra's repertoire includes a lively mix of big band music drawing from the libraries of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington and current contemporary jazz writers. MYJO gives regular concerts throughout the year and has played at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Fairfield Halls. The orchestra is also a regular visitor to The Wimbledon Tennis Championships where it performs on Men’s Semi-Finals Day. Following its appearance at the Championships, MYJO will be preparing to set off for the 43rd Montreux Jazz Festival, where it has an invitation to perform at the world famous jazz festival on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th July. If you are at the festival do come and say hello!

Both MMF performances will take place between 10.30am and 12.30 in the Aorangi Pavilion near Centre Court.
